This cartoon may need a bit of explanation.
My favorite band, The Moody Blues, released a new album in 1981 called Long Distance
Voyager. It reached #1 on the USA charts. At the time the NASA spacecraft Voyagers
1 & 2 were making headlines with spectacular images of the outer planets of our
solar system.
The Moody Blues chose a painting from the Arts Union Glasgow for their cover of the album
depicting a traveling entertainer. It was modified with a minor addition of a Long Distance Voyager, the
Voyager spacecraft. They carried the theme of the use of the spacecraft, and being from
a distant place through out their concert tour for that year.
Higher And Higher was probably the first major Moody Blues Fan publication in the USA.
At the time I thought it would be cute to submit a detailed cartoon featuring a drawing of the spacecraft rounding
Saturn with a phrase that's come to represent the Moody Blues, a song written by John Lodge,
"I'm Just A Singer In A Rock 'n' roll Band".
With a slight twist it became a Symbol, and smile or two was brought to the knowledgeable
Moody Blues fans (and now you).
This cartoon appeared in Volume 1 #3, Autumn 1984 issue of Higher & Higher magazine.
The original had far more detail than the printed version displayed. And I'm proud to
say that I no longer have it as it was later sold at auction for charity. GH
